The Fijian Resort

Background
Since opening in October 1967, The Fijian Resort has been the definitive holiday destination in Fiji. Over the years the resort has grown from it’s original 108 rooms, to 436 rooms, suites and beach bures, two swimming pools and numerous restaurants and bars.

In February 2002 the resort refurbished its three two-bedroom Deluxe Beachfront Bures. The complete refurbishment involved a fresh interior spatial design concept, colour schemes and furnishings. Red Turtle was commissioned to consult on the interior spatial design, and to create original art collections for the Beach Bures.

Brief
The Fijian Resort required original art that was appropriate to the environment, and that reflected the traditions and historic values of the Resort. Fundamental was an traditional Pacific theme.
Inspiration for the art collection was found in the intricate weaving by native Fijian women, traditional fishing materials, the magi-magi strapping decorating ceiling beams in native huts, and the linear detailing reflected in Tapa printing.

Art on every surface
The original art collections created for the deluxe Beach Bures at The Fijian Resort combine a range of media and styles.

As well as traditional wood-block prints, the collections incorporate three original arts rugs and framed archival black & white photographs of the region dating back to the 1800’s.
