Franklin Community Mosaic

This project was undertaken by Red Turtle in November 2000 to encourage appreciation of the Arts in local communities. Red Turtle donated the design and over 300 hours of time to create the life-size tile mosaic.

The 3-dimensional mosaic is an animated illustration of a landscape scene, inspired by the local district. It's intricate finishing detail is unique for a mosaic of its size - over 3,500 hand-cut tiles were hand-placed, and more than 50 ceramic characters commissioned for the work.

Wrapping 5mē around the four sides of a concrete pillar, the mosaic is intended as a vibrant and fun artwork for children and adults alike to experience and enjoy. The mosaic was unveiled by the Town Mayor in January 2001, and became the first piece of public artwork in the township of Pukekohe.
